Panopto Home
Panopto is a hosted course/knowledge capture solution provided to the UVA community by ITS and other schools within the University. The tool is integrated into UVACollab, Canvas, and Blackboard learning management systems. Panopto allows you to record your computer screen, camera image, and audio in a format specifically geared toward student study and review.
For use of Panopto in the School of Education & Human Development's Canvas system or at the Law School, please contact the respective school.
Set Up Panopto Access
Step 1. Install the Panopto Tool
Panopto is provided as a Tool in UVACollab (under Lecture Capture (Panopto)). To install the tool, log in to your UVACollab site and select Site Settings > Manage Tools > Select Lecture Capture (formerly Panopto) > select Continue at the bottom of the page > Select Finish.
Please do this at least a day in advance of needing to record so that the proper folders and permissions can be set up on the host server.
Step 2. Download the Recording Software
Selecting the Panopto tool will open the Panopto web interface. You must install the Panopto Recorder to record the first time. You can access the software by either selecting the Download Panopto button in the upper right corner of the page OR by selecting the orange Create
button and then Record > Download Panopto. Select the appropriate Panopto software version to download and install. Classroom computers managed by ITS and the Registrar already have the software installed. By default, instructors and/or administrators are the only people that can record into the default folder on your site. See below for granting recording access to your students.
Recording Sessions
In UVACollab, select the Panopto Tool to open the Panopto web interface. Then select Create: Record a new session at the top of the page. If the recorder software has been installed properly it will start.
- Choose a folder for your recording. This will default to the UVA Collab site's main folder for Panopto.
- Choose the primary Input for both camera and microphone. You must have at least one microphone enabled to record.
- Select Screen capture and/or PowerPoint. This will automatically put "chapter heading" for each screen.
- Hit the RECORD button. You may pause or stop the recording at any time. For complete overview of all the features and capabilities of the product, go to their Getting Started with Panopto Enterprise section at https://support.panopto.com.
FAQs
- How do I start and stop a recording using "hotkeys" to avoid post-editing?
- Please see:
- Can I ghost/unpublish videos, then republish them at will? Can I do something similar to UVA Collab's ghosting functionality?
- Yes, you can unpublish/publish videos progressively using the approval workflow in Panopto. Here's a help article from Panopto with the steps: How to Publish Videos Using the Approval Workflow. In the Settings for your Panopto folder, enable display of videos When approved by a publisher. If you want them to be visible immediately on upload, you can change this setting back as follows:
- Select the Folder Settings (cog) icon for your course folder.
- In the window that pops up, select Settings from the menu on the left.
- Change the Sessions become available option to immediately.
- I accidentally removed the Viewers Group from my course. No one can see the recordings. How do I fix this?
- If you've removed the Viewer group for the course, then when students try to access the tool, they get an error that says access is Forbidden. To re-add the student viewer group:
- Select the Folder Settings (cog) icon for your course folder.
- In the window that pops up, select Share from the menu on the left.
- Under Invite people, in the search box, start typing the name of your course, CollabSiteName.
- From the drop-down menu of groups to add, select CollabSiteName:Viewer.
- Leave the permission option as Can view.
- If you don't want to notify students that the folder is now available (again), uncheck the box Notify people via email.
- Select Save changes.
UVA Policy for Recording Class Sessions & Distributing Course Materials
These UVA policies about recording class sessions and distributing course materials apply to Panopto:
- Policy PROV-005 (Recording of Class Sessions & Distribution of Course Materials)
- Amended Policy PROV-008 (Teaching Courses for Academic Credit)
- Policy Guidance (Guidance for Implementing Policy PROV-005)
Retention Policy for Recordings
Panopto files are managed at a hosted site. Files that have not been accessed in four (4) years will be deleted. If you want to archive your files for a longer period of time, we recommend creating MP4 downloads of the files and storing them in OneDrive, UVA Box, or Kaltura. Instructions for downloading your recordings can be found at https://support.panopto.com/s/article/How-to-Download-a-Session-as-an-MP4.
