Best Practices for Connecting to eduroam in UVA Classrooms

Before you begin: Your device must be configured for eduroam WiFi access. For instructions, see Detailed eduroam WiFi Instructions above.

  1. Turn off all personal WiFi hotspot devices such as phones, tablets, and standalone hotspots, as these can interfere with eduroam WiFi access.
  2. Turn off any unnecessary devices that may be connected to eduroam. This will eliminate excessive network traffic in the classroom.
  3. Make sure the devices being used have recent software updates and have been restarted in advance of the class time.
  4. Devices used for accessing the poll, or exam, should have only the necessary applications open and a minimum number of browser tabs open to conserve network resources during class time.

Can't Connect to eduroam?

Make sure you meet all requirements for eduroam WiFi:

  • You must be a faculty, staff, or student at UVA (for guests, see UVA Guest WiFi Access)
  • Your computer or device must have an updated, supported operating system
  • You must be within range of UVA’s encrypted eduroam WiFi network
  • Your computer or device must have the correct time and date
  • Your computer or device must be WiFi-enabled

See the list of unsupported devices.

Information Technology Services (ITS) does not support these devices and provides instructions only as a courtesy.

  • Personal Wireless Printers
    • Wireless printers are not supported and will not work in student housing, however, Bluetooth printers may be used without interference with the UVA network.
    • WiFi networking on printers is typically not compatible (designed for home wireless networks) and users will be directed to turn off WiFi if the device interferes with the use of the UVA network by others.
  • Game and Video Consoles, Home Automation Devices, etc:
You will not be able to connect these devices to eduroam. Follow instructions to connect to UVA's unencrypted wahoo WiFi network.

If you can't configure your device for eduroam, contact your Local Support Partner (LSP) (mobile-friendly version) or the UVA Help Desk. Or, Connect to UVA's unencrypted wahoo WiFi.

Visiting Instructions for Individuals from eduroam-Participating Institutions

Please follow your home institution's instructions for eduroam WiFi configuration. Once your device is configured for eduroam WiFi from your home institution, then you will have access to eduroam WiFi while visiting UVA.
