Student Experiences of Teaching (SET)
SET Information Home & FAQs

UVA utilizes a Student Experiences of Teaching (SET) System for gathering student feedback about their experiences with instructors and courses each semester. The system may also be referred to as “Blue” which is the name of the software.

Spring 2025 SET Project Information:

  • The SET window for this SET project is 10 days.
  • Standard Schedule:
    • Opens 7 days before course end date (not exam date)
    • Closes 3 days after course end date
    • The bulk of the SETs will open on April 22 and close on May 2
  • A system-generated email will be sent to students and instructors when the SET window opens.
  • Students may access their SETs and instructors may view response rates via Canvas or directly via their UVA SET Dashboard.
  • SETs cannot be extended, reopened, edited, or deleted after they have been submitted.
  • School Codes GBUS, LAW, MED, MCDG, and MDS (except PHS dept) are not included.

FAQs About SETs

For Students

If you are enrolled in a course with an enrollment of less than three, you will not receive an evaluation for that course. This number was established by the Provost Office and the Schools in order to help protect the student’s anonymity.

Students can complete SETs using one of two methods (for detailed instructions with screenshots, see the top of this webpage):

  • Log directly in to your UVA Course Evaluation Dashboard
  • Access through your Learning Management System (LMS):
    • UVACollab Users: Navigate to your Home site in UVACollab and click on Course Evaluations in the tool menu.
    • UVACanvas Users: Sign into UVACanvas, access a course, and select the Course Evaluations link in the course navigation.

Your course experience feedback helps instructors improve the course for future students. It also helps them improve their teaching skills.

Your course experience feedback helps instructors, administrators, and staff identify what they can do to improve teaching and learning at UVA.

Your course experience feedback will also be reviewed by school and university administrators when they are making recommendations about hiring, promoting, and paying instructors.

Students will receive an email notification once the evaluation period has opened.  In most cases the evaluation window for a course will open seven days prior and close three days after the end date of the course.

Likely this is a situation where a Graduate Teaching Assistant has been assigned to the course to help input grades into SIS. If you do not recognize the instructor’s name, please leave the questions about that instructor as blank (or select neutral). If you do not recognize the primary instructor name, please contact: uvasetsupport@virginia.edu.

Yes, evaluation answers are anonymous. Your login information is used solely to ensure that you are registered for the course and that you submit only one evaluation for each course. In addition, some instructors will assign extra credit to students for submitting an evaluation. Therefore they will be able to view a list of student names who completed (or did not complete) an evaluation, but your responses are completely anonymous.

You are not required to answer all questions. You may skip any question that you don’t want to answer or for which there is not an appropriate answer choice provided.

Most courses with an enrollment of three or more are included within the Course Evaluation System.  However, this does not include Independent Study courses and courses taught by the Darden School of Business, the School of Law, and the School of Medicine.  If you have any questions about if your course will be evaluated, feel free to contact the Support Team: uvasetsupport@virginia.edu.
